Hockey Day Minnesota

January 22, 2007

Wow what a fun day of Hockey it was. The Lake of The Woods beat St. Paul Johnson 5-3 he he he he. It looked pretty chillly up there when i was watching it on T.V. My team played at the Excel Energy Center and tied SLP/Armstrong/Copper. YEah it sucked anyways the Gophers beat DEnver after losing to them the previouse night and the Wild lost in a shoot out to the Dallas stars. I’m going to recap the day fast. The Lake of the Woods game i didn’t see but I did see the Highlights and both teams havesome nice flashy players so hopefully they will go to a great college or something and have their skill reconized. The Wild game The Dallas starts struck first with a goal. Manny Fernandez gor hut. He sprained his Knee and Nick Backstrom came in and i think he did a great job. It went into the shoot out and Dallas scored first. the wild didn’t score until Koivu scored. Gabby didn’t score and neither did Wals or Dupuis or Roloston or Parish. I was hoping Mark Parish would because he is the Minnesota boy and it was hockey day Minnesota. anyways the gopher game. Ther gophers at one point had a 5-2 lead over Denver but DEnver evetully came back and the Gophers won 5-4. there were a lot of penalties and it was a very physical game. I jsut want to make a comment about two Gophers who are starting to stand out big time to me since they came back from Sweden. In my first post you will see how i didn’t think Erik Johnson was playing to his full potential. WEll let me take that back because he is on FIRE! Holy Crap. He has a wicked slap shot now and i am uterly impressed! He is playing way more physical and playing a lot smarter. He should have gone to the World Junior things in September. That’s a joke and no i am not stupid. Alos Jeff FRazee. This weekend thoI was a little confused with the way he made some saves but other than that he has been doing a nice job since he came back. Not taking anything away from Kellen who has played outstanding the whole season. I love that people are finally stepping up. Also DAvid Fisher is starting to come out of his shell too. I was impressed with him while everyone was in Sweden because he stood out a lot more than he did when everyone was here. Now he is standing out and making shots and great decisions while he is out on the ice. This second half of the season a lot of players are come up and rising to the challange and it is going to be exciting to watch the last couple months of the season. What was also cool about the game was Mike Vannelli getting a hat trick. People threw all these posters on too the ice and hats too. Tony Lucia was out on the ice shoving the stuff into the corner to help get it picked up faster. It was funny. All the guyz were really happy for Mike and he played a great series as always

Gophers VS Badgers

January 22, 2007

All right im a little slow on this thing but hey I have a life so forgive me. So the streak is over big deal. Now we can move on and play hockey. I’m kind of glad it is over because now there won’t be so much pressure on the boys the rest of the season and they can get back into Gopher shape because the last couple games they haven’t looked too hot. So the first game they lost obviously that sucks but what are you going to do about it. they went out there and slacked off a little bit and the Badger D were playing a great game and Elliot was on fire!!! Kellen played a great game as always and it stinks that he gets a bad mark because if you ask me it wasn’t his fault. But i don’t remember much of that game I just no the score was 1-2 and we move on now.

Saturday:
I took notes so i wouldn’t forget anything important that happened.

1st period

Jimmy O’Brien scored and yea it wasn’t anything fansty or anthing but yeah what ever its a goal. The Gophers had a lot of good chances but Elliot stoped most of them whats new right. That is the one thing that is frustrating. When teams actully have a good goalie. I hate that because then you can like not score. But then again you can’t score if you don’t shoot. Jimmy actully moved up to right wing on the second line. Don Lucia is showing confidence in him which is great for Jimmy and it shows that Don isn’t afraid to mix things up a bit. There was great D both ways in the 1st period. I was very impressed on how good it was. The first couple games after the World Juniors the D was a little messed up. I don’t know why that is but i just noticed it wasn’t as great as it was the first half but that might be because of fatigue (or what ever). Also another thing i noticed was Brian Schack up at forward. I think that is working out great. I really like him up there. At first I wasn’t too sure about it but now that i hve seen him play a couple more games as forward I really do think it is a great place for him to be. He knows the position and that’s great. A thing I questioned tho was when Jimmy O’Brien was on a break away and he missed and the that Ross Carlson kid that scored the 2 goals on friday was he slid right into the net. At first i thought he did it on purpose but then i saw the replay and i saw that he fell after he tried to catch up to Jimmy and that he would have slid into the net either way.

Penaltys
Minnesota:
Kyle Okposo (dont remember)
Tony Lucia (Tripping)

Wisc:
Davis Drewiske: Holding

2nd

Wisconsin defentaly stepped it up during the second period. They didn’t let the gophers stand around anymore and they got a lot more physical. Jeff Frazee had to make a ton of saves. He was like and acrobat out there. It was great to see him make all of the saves too. It was fun to watch. Oh. My. Gosh. The announcer person was from Wisconsin and he was soooooo annoying. Every time somebody shot he called it a drive it was soooooo annoying. And he also kept saying Alex Gologoski’s name wrong. I can’t even type how he said it but it was annoying. I was like gosh! There was no scoring in the second period either.

Penaltys
Minn:
Jimmy O’Brien: Hooking
Erik Johnson: Roughing

Wisc:
Joe Piskula: Holding
Blake Geoffrion: Roughing
Davis Drewiske: Hooking

3rd

The third period started with a 4 on 3 in favor of Minnesota. It was super funny because this guy was hacking at Frazee and Erik Johnson Shoves him over, on to Frazee which wasn’t to smart, and the kid trys to get up but Erik pushes him back into the net. It was super funny but i think he got a penalty for it. I think that Jeff Frazze totally kept them into the game. He was making a ton of great saves all through out the game expecially when the Gophers were in the penalty box. There was a lot of roughing around after the whistle and stuff liek that. Once Stoa was coming across the crease and there was a guy in there and he slapped him across the face with his stick. I personally thought it was funny but I guess he didn’t think so because he started arguing with the ref about it. In the last seconds the Badgers called a time out and there was an empty net but nothing happened because Minnesota went on to win 1-0 with Jeff Frazee getting the shut out.

Penalties:
Minn.
Erik Johnson: Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Tony Lucia: Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Kyle Okposo: Cross-Checking

Wisc.
Ben Grotting: Unsportsmanlike Conduct
Ross Carlson: Unsportsmanlike Conduct

Wow what a weekend full of excitement and new beginnings. So heres to the future and the National Championship run that is about to become the Gophers!

Gophers Dominating the Minnesota Sports World

January 12, 2007

YEAH! The Wild won on New Year’s Eve! It was a great game to be at it was amazing! I LOVE Manny! Oh My Gosh it was so funny watching him push people out of the crease. Ha Ha. I was having a good laugh at that. Anyways um and then they lost to Tampa Bay so that stinks but we will get over it. I am so annoyed with people demanding Gabby back because if he comes back to soon he could hurt his Groin even more. Oh and the when i was at the Wild game on NYE on the power play people were screaming at the players to shoot the puck. you people obviously don’t get it because you are supposed to set up and be patient and get a good shot. That is why they pass so much and shoot little.

Gopher: They Beat Ferris State in the Dodge Holiday Classic and they beat the whole thing. It’s sad that Tyler Hirsch s gone but he has some problems that he needs to work out in his head so I wish him all the best and I hope he has a great life. Even though the Gophers did’t have Tyler of The five that are in Sweden I still think they played a good game. The only things was they were SUPER slow. I was like on edge the first period and I was a little nervouse something bad was going to happen. But Briggs shut them down and that was what we needed. I like Briggs a lot more now than i did in the beginning and I am really impressed by his preformance. Okay the goals for the Gophers were scored by: Derek Peltier, Tony Lucia, Alex Gologoski, Jay Barriball, and Blake Wheeler. Derek Peltier has a nice way of showing young kids to CRASH THE NET! Tony Lucia’s goal was nice too. He dove and shot and then rolled a little bit. It was a nice goal. Jay Barriball’s goal was just a great effort by him it was a nice shot. Despite what other people say about him i think he is a great player. Blake Wheeler well he is just Blake. I love how hard he works and I’m really impressed on the way he is playing. Alright i am super behind so lets move on to Mankato. Friday night we won 5-1. I thought the MAvericks jsut totally shut down in that game. They weren’t making any good passes and they were just letting the gophers dominate. I was a little surprised that they went out there and slacked off that much. I though they would take advantage of the 5 players still at the World Juniors Tournament. Speaking of the World thing did you hear that Kyle Okposo only had 1 assist the entire tournament?! I was so surprised to hear that. Erik Johnson had a great tournament he scored like 4 goals and had a couple of assists too. That is great for Erik and I hope he will keep this momentum alive and start scoring some goals for the Gophers. Fast forward to Sunday at Marriucci arena. I didn’t get to see the game unfortunatly i had a gmae of my own but seeing that we only had one goal scored the whole game was pretty pathetic. I mean come on at least score two!!! Kellen Briggs is amazing oh my gosh! he is totally keeping on our streak and we are going to need him this weekend against Wisconny. So after the game i guess on Sunday there were a couple heated words exchanged between MSU coach Jutting and another MSU coach. I have the story from Mankato Free Press:

WCHA investigating quarrel following Mavericks-Gophers game
Minnesota State assistant coach, league referee involved in heated exchange
By Shane Frederick
The Free Press

MANKATO —

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association is investigating an altercation between a Minnesota State University men’s coach and a league referee following Sunday’s game at Minnesota.

Mavericks assistant coach Eric Means and referee Jon Campion engaged in a heated exchange in the Mariucci Arena locker-room area shortly after MSU’s 1-0 loss to the top-ranked Gophers.

University of Minnesota police officers physically removed Means and Mavericks head coach Troy Jutting, who was trying to diffuse the argument, from the immediate area.

Jutting said Tuesday that MSU is also “looking into what happened Sunday night after the game.”

Means acknowledged the argument with Campion but declined further comment.

Doug Spencer, the WCHA’s associate commissioner for public relations said league commissioner Bruce McLeod and supervisor of officials Greg Shepherd “are aware of what happened.”

Shepherd attended Sunday’s game. McLeod is attending NCAA meetings in Florida. There was no word of possible suspensions or public reprimand Tuesday.

“They’re getting information from different people and are looking into it,” Spencer said.

Jutting said he had been in contact with Shepherd.

The Gophers had seven power-play opportunities in Sunday’s game; the Mavericks had two. In Friday’s series opener at Mankato, the Gophers, who won 5-1, had six power-play chances, and the Mavericks had two.

Before speaking with media members after the game, Jutting had an animated exchange with police officers, apparently about how they handled the altercation.

When Jutting returned to the gathered reporters, he declined to comment on what led to the exchange with police.

Remember Minnesotans and everyone else out there. This weekend keep this one comment in your mind….

BETTER DEAD THAN RED!!!!! WHOO HOOO! GO GOPHERS!!!
